Magnetic Fields and the Triaxiality of Molecular Cloud Cores

چکیده

We make the hypothesis that molecular cloud fragments are triaxial bodies with a large scale magnetic field oriented along the short axis. While consistent with theoretical expectations, this idea is supported by magnetic field strength data, which show strong evidence for flattening along the direction of the mean magnetic field. It is also consistent with early submillimeter polarization data, which show that the projected direction of the magnetic field is often slightly misaligned with the projected minor axis of a molecular cloud core, i.e., the offset angle Ψ is nonzero. We calculate distributions of Ψ for various triaxial bodies, when viewed from a random set of viewing angles. The highest viewing probability always corresponds to Ψ = 0, but there is a finite probability of viewing all nonzero Ψ, including even Ψ = 90; the average offset typically falls in the range 10 − 30 for triaxial bodies most likely to satisfy observational and theoretical constraints. Magnetic Fields in Molecular Cloud Cores

Observations of magnetic field strengths imply that molecular cloud fragments are individually close to being in a magnetically critical state, even though both magnetic field and column density measurements range over two orders of magnitude. The turbulent pressure also approximately balances the self-gravitational pressure. These results together mean that the one-dimensional velocity dispers...

The shapes of molecular cloud cores in Orion

We investigate the intrinsic shapes of starless cores in the Orion GMC, using the prestellar core sample of Nutter & Ward-Thompson (2007), which is based on submillimeter SCUBA data. We employ a maximum-likelihood method to reconstruct the intrinsic distribution of ellipsoid axial ratios from observations of the axial ratios of projected plane-of-the-sky core ellipses. We find that, independent...

The impact of magnetic fields on single and binary star formation

We have performed magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the collapse and fragmentation of molecular cloud cores using a new algorithm for MHD within the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method, that enforces the zero magnetic divergence constraint. We find that the support provided by magnetic fields over thermal pressure alone has several important effects on fragmentation and the form...

YSOs in Collapsing Molecular Cloud Cores

The collapse of slowly rotating molecular cloud cores threaded by magnetic fields is investigated by high-resolution numerical simulation. Outflow formation in the collapsing cloud cores is also followed. In the models examined, the cloud core and parent cloud rotate rigidly and are initially threaded by a uniform magnetic field. The simulations show that the cloud core collapses along the magn...

Three-dimensional simulations of molecular cloud fragmentation regulated by magnetic fields and ambipolar diffusion

We employ the first fully three-dimensional simulation to study the role of magnetic fields and ion-neutral friction in regulating gravitationally-driven fragmentation of molecular clouds. The cores in an initially subcritical cloud develop gradually over an ambipolar diffusion time while the cores in an initially supercritical cloud develop in a dynamical time. The infall speeds on to cores ar...
